Hitting the USA Today Bestselling List

Here on the hot sand is Kim Hornsby, who's gathered together a bunch of BRA authors in a Christmas Romance anthology box set. Read on to see what they are doing with this set!

Hello Readers: This month, a group of us are trying to reach USA Today Bestselling Author status. A lofty goal, I know, but not unattainable or undeserving, I believe.
I put together a box set of 12 Christmas novellas. Some sweet romance, some sexy, one a mystery, one has a Marine, one has a coffee farmer, one involves jurors, one a cowboy, another has hockey players, one a photographer. All have Christmas and happy endings.

If we sell a ton of these box sets, it might happen that our set reaches the top 150 books sold that week.
It's hard for Indie authors to achieve this because you need money to buy ads to drive sales and the big publishers have the money to buy their authors BIG ADS.
Sad but true that an author can buy their way to the bestseller lists. Money buys ads, ads sell books.

On November 14th, our box set, Romancing the Holidays, loads to Amazon and the book becomes available to the public. That's our official launch day but you can purchase your copy now and have it automatically delivered to your inbox. That's called a presale and as of today, we have 800 presales reserved by readers. We need at least 4,000 sales to hit the list and just might make it. We have $1,000 worth of ads coming out Nov 14-18 to boost sales for the week that counts our sales to see if we make the top 150 books published that week. This is the closest I've come to this strategy working. My first box set in 2015 got really close but we didn't make it. WE had a ton of fun trying and gave over $1,000 to breast cancer.

Please, please, if you can spare 99 cents, and would like to see the underdog win something, consider buying your copy of this set of 12 novellas, even if you don't read romance. We are donating a big chunk of proceeds to Breast Cancer Awareness again and that’s even another reason to buy a copy of Romancing the Holidays.
Here's where to buy your copy!

Summer Cocktails For Thirsty People

Summer Drinks are being talked about on the BEACH today. Here's some of our favs as authors who need libations to keep going some days...

The Whiskey Smash

Fresh Lemon Juice
Whiskey
Mint
Simple Syrup or Agave Syrup
The picture is a bit misleading since I used a blend of Whiskey and Rye, an all Rye version is fantastic as well.  Either muddle the Mint at the bottom of the glass or give it a good clap between your hands to release the oils.  Fill the glass with ice and fill it 2/3 with Lemon Juice (about 3-4 lemons) and 1/3 Whiskey.  It is pretty tart as is so a shot of Simple Syrup helps to balance out the cocktail.

FIRST BLOOM
  • 2 oz. Material Vodka
  • 75 oz. Lemon Juice
  • 75 oz. Lavender Mint Syrup
  • 5 oz. St. Germain
Method:
  1. Combine vodka, lemon juice, lavender mint syrup and St. Germain in shaker with ice.
  2. Shake for 20 seconds.
  3. Strain into a coupe glass.
  4. Garnish with a cherry blossom sprig

The Paloma

2 ounces silver tequila
2 ounces fresh grapefruit juice
½ ounce fresh lime juice
¼ ounce St. Germain
¼ ounce simple syrup
Lime or grapefruit wheel, for garnish

Directions

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the tequila with the grapefruit juice, lime juice, St. Germain and simple syrup. Shake well and strain into an ice-filled bucket glass. Serve immediately, garnished with a lime or grapefruit wheel.

Mojito Slushie

  • 1/2 c. fresh lime juice (about 4 to 6 limes)
  • 1/4 c. agave
  • 1/3 c. fresh mint leaves
  • Zest of 2 limes
  • 1/2 c. light rum
  • ice
  • Mint sprigs, for garnish
  • Lime wedges, for garnish

Directions

  1. Add the lime juice, agave, mint leaves, lime zest, and rum to a blender. Blend until smooth. Fill the blender to top with ice and blend until slushy.
  2. Pour into glasses, garnishing each with a sprig of mint and a lime slice.

Keep Your Pets Safe This Summer

Here on the sand we have bestselling romantic suspense author, Jacki Delecki, sharing summer safety tips for pets. An avid dog lover, Jacki's contemporary romantic suspense series features several animals as secondary characters. You can download the Grayce Walters Boxed Set which includes all four books in the series, for just $.99 for a limited time.

Keep your Fourth festive (and your summer sunny) by implementing these strategies to keep pets safe and healthy. It is especially important to consider the welfare of your pets during Fourth of July celebrations because many are terrified of fireworks and loud noises.

-Keep pets indoors.
-Use only pet-specific products such as bug repellant and sunscreen.
-Prevent pets from drinking alcohol, which can poison them.
-Outfit pets with ID tags and/or microchip. Keep a clear, current picture of your pet in case they get lost.
-Do not use fireworks around pets.
-Keep harmful chemicals such as lighter fluid and citronella products away from pets.
-Don't give pets table food. Many human foods are hazardous to animals.
-Supervise children around pets who may be agitated or frightened by loud noises. Additionally, make sure children do not inadvertently leave behind toys, such as glow sticks, which dogs may chew and ingest.
-Secure your pet in a safe, quiet, comfortable area at home while you enjoy fireworks and celebrations.
-If traveling with your pet, bring health/vaccination certificates. Check any requirements if you are traveling internationally or flying.
-Plan ahead to find pet-friendly hotels.
-Install pet restraints, pet barriers or use a travel crate in your vehicle to avoid your pet being injured in an accident or distracting the driver.
-Pack pet gear for your road trip: water bowl, toys, dog food, leash, grooming supplies and pet first-aid kit.
-Never leave pets alone in an unattended vehicle, especially in hot weather.
-Learn water safety tips to keep dogs safe around pools and at the beach.
-Know the signs of heat stroke (rapid panting, bright red tongue, thick sticky saliva, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea) and proper treatment.

Make the most of summer with a book club

Here on the sand we have bestselling romantic suspense author, Jacki Delecki, who's going to share tips on how to set up a summer book club.

Welcome summer! The warm weather season is officially underway. For many people, summertime is an opportunity to slow down and enjoy life. If personal obligations like school, family, or work keep you too busy to participate with a book club during the rest of the year, consider setting up a summer book club. Not sure where to start? Here are some tips and suggestions.

Identify potential book club members. This can include friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, etc. Consider the tone and theme of the club to help determine the best fit of members. Do you want a casual girls’ night out or something for a range of ages?

Determine when your book club will meet. This will depend on members’ availability. Are most people available during the day or in the evening? How about weekends? Where will the group meet? Decide on frequency and how long meetings will be. Don’t be intimidated by logistical details. Book clubs don’t have to be hours and hours long. How about an hour meet-up at the local coffee shop? The goal is to merge your love of reading and time with special folks.

Decide what book(s) members will read. Your book club can be any format you choose. Instead of everyone reading the same book, maybe members share recommendations and brief critiques of books they are reading independently. If you prefer a more traditional approach, where everyone reads the same book and shares a discussion, check a best-seller list or accept suggestions from members. Put the list of titles to a vote and go from there. Here is an article with the year’s most anticipated book club reads.

Recruit volunteers. Invite members of the group to help organize the book club:
  •     Someone to send out meeting reminders
        Discussion moderators
        Refreshments (if appropriate)
Research, such as author bio, book club discussion notes/questions
Decide on ground rules/meeting format. Will the conversation be casual or is each person expected to contribute to the dialogue? How will the moderator/group handle interruptions, keep the conversation on topic and make sure every person has a chance to be heard? Develop a list of questions to facilitate the discussion.

Read, relax and enjoy!

Do you have tips for setting up a book club or book recommendations? Share your suggestions.

From Novel to the Big Screen!

We have Kim Hornsby on the BEACH today to give us some helpful hints about pitching your novel for a movie deal...

I recently attended a conference called Connecting Writers with Hollywood in Spokane Washington, (a surprisingly ripe bed of film people live or originate there!) and was encouraged that Hollywood wants successful novels for adaptations.
Shawn West, an agent formerly with William Morris, now with the Wayne Agency, represents authors for film deals and spoke eloquently about what the film industry looks for specifically in a novel.
Shawn was talking about a film deal with a large studio out of Hollywood, not a small film company that would make an Indie Film and then sell it to a large studio at an Indie festival.

Here's what they are looking for in a novel or spec script (a tool to sell the premise but not the final script) for a film deal:

1. A Relatable Hero
2. Strong Visual
3. 3 Act Structure
4. 2 Hour Limit
5. Writers that Take Responsibility

He also spoke about franchise appeal. If the book to film is a huge hit, do you have a sequel?
Does it have mass appeal? Young Men, Young Women, Older Men, Older Women
Does it have merchandising potential? Lunchboxes, T-shirts, toys etc.
If it has many hard to reach locations, it will be a large budget film, making it less appealing.

If you get to the point of pitching to a large Hollywood studio, here are some pointers from Shawn:

Don't suggest Tom Cruise play the lead at Sony (he's with Warner Bros)
Pitch to the correct company. Don't pitch a crime drama to Lifetime or a tv drama to Universal
Have a 10 second log line ready.
Know the 3 Acts and where they come in the story.  1 hour dramas have 5 Acts
Be sure to mention if the film is visually appealing. Set the stage.

And a few things I've learned from various people about Pitching:

Sit on the edge of your chair, don't get comfortable.
Imagine telling a campfire story.
Don't pitch only to the men in the room.
Include the conflict. Make it sound life or death.

If you are reading this, I'm hoping you have a pitch coming up or intend to pitch your book. Good luck and remember that what one person doesn't want, another person might see the possibilities.

Readers & Writers in Seattle

Here on the sand we have bestselling romantic suspense author, Jacki Delecki, who's going to share photos and fun from a recent reader/writer event she attended in Seattle.

Last weekend I attended the Readers & Writers Seattle event. As always, the best part of the event was meeting readers in person. Okay, I lied. The ripped cover models were the best part of the event. If you've ever attended a book signing or reader event featuring cover models, you'll just nod and agree. If you haven't....find one to attend ASAP!

Of course I was so busy enjoying the eye candy that I forgot to get photos with them. I did, however, get pictures with some of my reader and writer friends.

Some of the readers created "memory books" with a page dedicated to each author. They collect autographs and it was an honor to sign my page in this reader's book.

Here's a group photo taken at the event. FYI, tickets for 2018 are already on sale!

Author Promotional Material - Yay or Nay?

This week we welcome co-founder of Beach Read Authors, KIM HORNSBY to the beach to talk about promotional material for conferences and guest appearances.
Take it away...

I'm heading to a conference tomorrow and am packing my promo stuff. Sometimes I take 400 DREAM necklaces to put in the registration bags. Sometimes I have book marks. I've used pens, recipe cards, even little chocolates with the book cover on the packaging. Who knows if anyone sees the promo and goes to the site to buy books BUT, if you can spare a hundred here and there, it never hurts to give out free stuff.
Book signing- with Author David Schoonover. I gave out chocolate!

Especially if you put your web site link on the material. Or, at least your name.
It's never a good idea to hand out freebies if the recipient can't remember who gave it to them. That makes pens a good idea because they are a useful item with room for lettering.  I have a purple sparkly pen from author Sabrina York and that thing travels all over the house, then to my purse, my car and back in to my office. That pen is a great example of money well spent.
My DREAM necklaces weren't a genius idea because they did not have my name of them, BUT, I had fun making them and liked the finished product and got loads of tweets and posts in about them before they went in to the registrant's bags at InD'Scribe Con in California last year. For the posts alone on social media, I'm glad I spent the money, even if no one ever thought afterwards, "This is a nice necklace that Kim Hornsby gave me. I think I'll buy her book about dream jumping."

I like recipe cards, maybe because I love to eat. I like to get recipe cards too. Unfortunately, my favorite recipe cards have what I like to call half-assed promo on the back. On these ones to the left, I did a wacky bad job of lining up my books and left off my web site! (Imagine me hitting my head with a one of my books.)

The conference I'm attending this weekend in Spokane, Washington is for anyone wanting to pitch their book to producers and film makers. I'm teaching a workshop called Channeling Your Inner Rock Star which draws upon the idea that rock stars are the epitome of confidence and branding. I'll be teaching people how to have confidence in public situations. Like pitching, Or just talking to a group. I love this workshop. I love teaching. We talk about digging deep to create that celebrity side of you, then going forth to wow everyone.
Postcards had web address on back!
The swag I bought for this conference is mini guitar key chains. I wish I could tell you that they are inscribed with my web site link but they are not. However, anyone at my class will be offered the handout on tips and tricks for self-confidence by email and I hope to add people to my mailing list. Giving out the key chains is just a gift from me to my "clients" not intended to promote my books but to help the people who attend my workshop to summon bravery when needed.
Hand goes in the pocket, touches the smooth guitar, brain remembers "I'm a Rock Star! I Can Do This!"

Swag, as promo material is called, is something that might not pay off, but then again, it might. Are you willing to take a financial risk and hope to sell some books? Maybe not get a return for your investment? Do you consider getting email addresses a return investment?

If you decide to buy bulk key chains, pens, bookmarks, or make stickers to put on stuff you hand out, just make sure your swag makes the recipient want to know more about you and your books!

Birthday Giveaways!

The Beach would like to welcome one of BRA's founders, Kim Hornsby! Kim is a Bestselling Amazon author who we heard is having a birthday...

Yesterday I turned a big number and spent the day telling myself it's OK to have lived that many years. In fact, it's fantastic! Not only because many people don't get to be this old, but because with that big number comes life experience and yes, wisdom. You don't get to be 60 without learning something!

In celebration of my birthday, I reduced my Indie books on Amazon to rock bottom prices. As low as they can go. My novels are now only 99 cents and the anthology of 5 books in the Dream Jumper Series is only $2.99. This won't last so if you are at all curious about my writing, the idea of entering dreams, Maui lifestyle, scuba diving, mysteries, romance and the possibility of the after life, pick up a book!
The first book in the series is absolutely FREE, so there you go. It's a love story but be forewarned that it leads into the series so many plot points are not tied up.

Here's a list of discounted novels:

Girl of his Dream  - FREE
The Dream Jumper's Promise - 99c
The Dream Jumper's Secret - 99c
The Dream Jumper's Pursuit - 99c

Find my books on AMAZON

I wasn't able to discount my other bestseller, Necessary Detour, because Amazon owns it and controls the pricing but it is only $3.99.

As for my birthday...it was filled with friends at the spa, lunch in Woodinville, WA, a clean house (thanks hubby) Kids home and happy, a family dinner of my favorite pizza, cake and family movie night. Oh and sunshine in the Seattle area! I couldn't have asked for more.

Enjoy my books and don't forget to review, unless you are a man who usually reads political biographies and ends up writing this review:

 1.0 out of 5 stars
on May 6, 2017
This book is nothing but trash. I am sorry I purchased it. I am trying to find out how to delete it from my Kindle. It is too bad that there are people who actually read this kind of trash. I only gave it one star so it would move to the next page. What a waste of time and money!

Five Fascinating Facts about Regency-era Weddings

Here on the sand we have bestselling romantic suspense author, Jacki Delecki, who's going to tell us a bit about Regency-era wedding traditions.

One of the reasons many readers enjoy historical fiction is that it provides a glimpse into the lives, relationships and traditions of different countries and eras. Weddings and marriage are, by far, one of the most fascinating topics to research.

Here are five interesting facts I discovered about weddings and matrimony during the Regency era while writing my upcoming release, A Wedding Code (The Code Breakers series book 5, releasing April 25, 2017).

For many centuries, marriage was not based on love, but as a strategic alliance between families for social, political or monetary gain. Marriages were often arranged when the bride and groom were still children.

Although the popularity of love matches began gaining popularity in 18th and 19th century England, demonstrating passion for one’s spouse was considered déclassé.

Almack’s, a London social club, became one of the most prominent “marriage marts” of Regency England. Debutantes, who once sought to be presented at the King’s court, vied for vouchers from Almack’s patronesses so they could be presented there instead.

Regency brides did not commission gowns exclusively for their wedding. Most gowns were re-worn. Although any color or pattern was acceptable, blue, white, silver and light-colored hues were most popular. Instead, many brides cherished their wedding shoes as treasured keepsakes.

Brides were given a wedding ring during the wedding ceremony, but men did not wear wedding rings.

What is your favorite contemporary or Regency-era wedding tradition?

Alexa Grace - In Memorium

The Beach is devastated to learn that our fellow author, Alexa Grace, has lost her battle with Thymic Cancer and passed away.
Not only a member of Beach Read Authors, but an author who participated in several Suspense Box Sets with many of the BRA authors, Alexa was always cheerful, positive and ;helpful in promoting our projects, using her own money to buy ads for us smaller authors. She was grateful when we decided to donate a portion of our proceeds from the box sets to Thymic Cancer Research and touched that her fellow authors would do this.

I didn't know Alexa face to face but always held out hope we'd cross paths at a writers' conference someday. She'd achieved USA Today Bestselling status, writing Romantic Suspense and is still selling well on Amazon. With two series, the Deadly Series and the Profile Series, Alexa has thousands of reviews, probably millions of fans and will be missed in the Romance community as a prolific author. Her permafree lead-in to the Deadly Series is ranked in the top 1500 free on Amazon and has over 3,000 reviews.

Here's what her Amazon bio says:

Alexa Grace is the USA TODAY bestselling author of riveting romantic suspense novels including the Deadly Series and the Profile Series.
Alexa's journeys into suspense are accurate police procedurals with a healthy dose of passion.A voracious reader, she has been influenced by writers ranging from James Patterson to Lisa Gardner to Nora Roberts.
Her books, Deadly Offerings and Profile of Evil, have been recognized by RT Book Reviews as Top Picks.  Profile of Terror was awarded Best Romantic Suspense of 2014 by the Little Shop of Readers Reviewers Choice.
Alexa Grace earned a bachelor's degree in Communication and a Master's degree in Education from Indiana State University.  Before becoming a full-time author, she worked as a corporate training director.
An Indiana native, Alexa divides her time between Indiana and Florida. She has a daughter and four Miniature Schnauzers, three of which are rescues.   As a writer, she is fueled by Starbucks lattes, chocolate and communicating with her street team and readers.

3 Reasons to Attend a Reader/Writer Event

Here on the sand we have Award-Winning Author, Jacki Delecki, who's going to tell us a bit about attending reader/writer events.

One of the rising trends in the book community is the proliferation of reader and writer events. Back in the day, authors used book signings as a venue to connect with readers. With the closure of many brick-and-mortar book stores and the evolution of the digital marketplace, traditional book signings are a less popular option, especially when compared to everything a reader/author event (sometimes called a reader appreciation event) offers.

If you haven't attended a reader/writer event, here are three reasons to finish the chapter you're currently reading and find an event to explore today!
  1.  SWAG! Event coordinators usually assemble a goody bag for attendees, but authors also have lots (and lots) of goodies. Tip: Bring an extra tote or backpack to carry all the great stuff you collect. You can always tell the hardcore readers who have attended events before because they bring those wheeled-shopper carts!
  2. Make new book friends. Everyone at a reader/writer event is there because they love books - reading them or writing them. This fun and friendly environment makes it easy to chat with strangers. You might even make a new BBF (book best friend)!
  3. Meet the real person behind the book cover. Have you ever wondered what your favorite author is like in real life? Connecting in person gives you chance to bond over shared interests, laugh over an inside joke or just express how much you enjoy their work.
Each reader/writer event is different. Some last a few hours; some a few days. Some are free; some require paid admission. Some include a variety of genres; some are genre specific. Most include a book signing and opportunity to mix and mingle with authors.

I'm participating in the Reader & Writer Event in Seattle, June 3, 2017. This event includes more than 50 authors, hot cover models and other "bookish" fun. If you're in the area, get a ticket before the event is sold out. If not, look online for other reader/writer events and have a great time!

Toby Neal Launches New Series!

Today on the BEACH, we are happy to welcome one of our own authors, Toby Neal, who is writing a Romantic Pandemic series with Emily Kimelman that will stretch over many books. The first one, Scorch Road, available for pre-order now (Jan 31st launch).

This is a post pulled off Facebook on Toby and Emily's site, written by them:

Ok, just a little somethin' somethin about the WOMEN of the Scorch Series.Who could we dream up to match the awesome Luciano brothers? Each brother finds just the right woman in our stories...and some of the pairings surprise!
1) These women are all amazing. (like you and me and US!)
2) they all have flaws and challenges that get worked on during the journey and in the relationship (like us!)
3) Variety of careers: biologist, schoolteacher, virology expert, ER doctor, law student, actress (like us!)
4) All kinds of bodies! Waify and wiry, chubby and fulsome, muscular with big booty, slim with large boobs, Hollywood yoga, short and curvy (like us!)
5) Able to take a lickin' and keep on tickin (you can interpret that a number of ways!) but love their men enough to follow them through hell and lead the way, and enjoy being carried when the situation calls for it (like us!)
6) Variety of intelligences: supersmart to average.(like us!)
7) Variety of backgrounds and issues, minorities and economic classes from American aristocracy to trailer trash (like us!)
Yes, Emily Kimelman-Gilvey and I had so much fun creating these women. Unlike our other books, we developed all the characters, the world of the books, the plot of the pandemic and the outlines of each story ahead of time.
And we think its led to the creation of something truly special. Hope you all are enjoying Scorch Road and getting ready to find out what your awesome Launch Bonus is! We appreciate YOU, and YOU inspire us. ~Toby
P.S. thanks so much to all of you who posted reviews on Goodreads, they are thrilling to read, and we hope you won't mind reposting them on Amazon when the books go live! :)
What makes a heroine in a story someone you root for?

Speaking at Barnes & Noble Maui

The Beach is happy to welcome one of our most faithful bloggers, Kim Hornsby, who is actually going to a beach soon! Read on...

This week I'm packing my sunscreen and string bikini (not!) and am heading to Maui. I 'm so excited I could spit.
I'll be flying Thursday at dawn, arriving shortly after (time difference) and heading to this beach below to run in the water with happy tears streaming down my face.

My girlfriend Eliza is coming with me and we are staying at Lynn's house where I wrote and staged THE DREAM JUMPER'S PROMISE.
Lynn has a big hammock on her porch overlooking Molokai, tea lights everywhere, a cute little dog, an open concept house filled with Hawaiian artifacts and my dive gear in her attic. Eliza, Lynn and I will talk about how growing older sucks and doesn't and will make breakfasts with home-grown papayas and bananas, will laugh about funny cat YouTube videos, will wear cotton sundresses over bathing suits, listen to the cockatiel next door squawk constantly, and will head off to Barnes & Noble on Saturday for my talk at 2 pm on writing a mystery novel that was set on Maui.
Yes, my friends, I am speaking at Maui's only bookstore on the Saturday and hoping against hope that someone besides Lynn and Eliza attend. Actually, I've heard from six other friends that they will come so I won't be standing at a table talking to the same two friends I've been talking to for days.

If you are on Maui on Saturday January 14th at 2 pm, I beg you to stop in and prove to Barnes & Noble that taking a chance on an Indie Author was a good thing. I'll even give you the cash to buy my book from them. Use the code words "Slip me cash, please." No questions.

See you there and if the talk goes long, let's head on over to Aloha Mixed Plate to drink Kona ale and eat traditional Hawaiian macaroni salad and grilled humuhumunukunukuapuaa. (kidding--it's the state fish!)
