Mele Kalikimaka everyone! Kim here.

And no, I didn't exactly switch genres. I've always written Contemporary Romance Novellas as my side hustle. I publish them, sometimes they're free, sometimes I write under the name Kiki Abbott and then I unpublish them. It's complicated. I write them quickly, price them at free or 99 cents and enjoy having something different to offer my readers.

Last year this time, my screenplay agent asked me if I had a Christmas Romance screenplay because she'd just pitched my book Christmas in Whistler to a producer. I took to the computer and wrote a screenplay from that. Up to that point, I'd only written a feature film thriller screenplay and was working on a TV pilot about ghosts. But the Christmas theme just rolled off my brain and so I quickly plotted another TV movie screenplay set at Christmas. That was last October. Cut to a year later and I have sold a Christmas TV movie screenplay to a producer who plans to make the film next Spring (it was my 3rd effort) and now have interest in the 2nd screenplay that I turned into a novella called Christmas at Crystal Creek. That one is looking pretty darned good for getting on film next year too. We have an actress interested in the lead and she'd be wonderful! I can't tell you any more than this right now but stay tuned for a big announcement when I can. I announce on my Kim Hornsby Beach Club site:
And, I love those Christmas Box Sets where you get 10 books for .99. Each year I compile one of those with 9 other authors and this year our set started early to get more sales and hopefully achieve USA Today Bestseller Status in late October. Fingers crossed. Christmas at Mistletoe Lodge is a set of 10 novellas, all with a Mistletoe Lodge somewhere in the story. Cute, right? I'm writing mine now and loving the story about a psychologist who hasn't been out of her house in a year but has to attend a Christmas wedding at Mistletoe Lodge.
Most of the authors are already USA Today Bestselling Authors or NY Times Bestselling Authors so you know the stories will be fantastic.
As well as this, I've published a Christmas Cookbook to drive readers over to the box set! The recipes are based around cold weather needs but we have mac and cheese, cookies, and lots of recipes in there that can be made in sweltering hot weather too.
I hope you'll consider downloading the cookbook to get our sales up, to get noticed, to get more people on our box set site to reach USA Today status and also send those kids at St. Judes a nice big check in January when we get paid.

Hello Readers! I've delved into a new series and am having a blast writing it. Finally, I gave myself permission to write 1st person, my favorite, from the viewpoint of a slightly snarky person. How wonderful is that?
Moody & The Ghost books are written from the viewpoint of a 28-year-old woman who has gone blind in a car accident but finds she can see in the presence of a ghost. The spirit just happens to be a very handsome sea captain from the 1850's and as Bryndle Moody copes with his comings and goings and the life of a blind person, she gets in all kinds of sticky situations.

The series was originally written as a TV series, the first book being the Pilot so if it ends leaving you wanting more next week, you'll know why. That's how TV is written. In the promo to try to get a producer to pick up the series, I say it's like the movie GHOST meets Scooby Doo. There's a fun team of paranormal investigators led by Bryndle and they travel around in a van called the Marshmallow. But also, there's this amazing romance that comes to fruition in Book 3 that is reminiscent of the movie Ghost with Demi Moore.

It's ghosts, suspense, humor, romance and recipes!
DEAD AHEAD - BOOK 1
Until recently.

After a car accident that took her husband’s life and her eyesight, Youtube celebrity and paranormal investigator, Moody, finds she has also lost her ability to communicate with ghosts. When she mysteriously inherits a house on the Oregon Coast, Bryn and her team set out from her Seattle houseboat to investigate. The house has many surprises and as Bryn desperately tries to restore her clairvoyance, she discovers an elusive inhabitant with the ability to salvage her business and her reason for living.
For a price.
Take it away, Kim...

I love the beach!

And looking out at the ocean. That's why my brand as an author is associated with the word BEACH. I write beach reads (entertaining fast-paced, story driven) suspense books and envision people on a beach reading it in print. Or reading on a Kindle, although they can be hard to see in bright sunlight!
In THE DREAM JUMPER'S PROMISE, there are many beach scenes because the protagonist is a scuba dive shop owner and a diver.
The second book THE DREAM JUMPER'S SECRET begins on a dive but the story is quickly taken to Seattle and then on to Afghanistan where most of the country is beach with no ocean.
The third book THE DREAM JUMPER'S PURSUIT travel all over the place on a manhunt, ending up in Nicaragua and on the side of Volcano Mombacho. Not alot of beach in that one but definite adventure and high action story.
NECESSARY DETOUR has the protag living on a lake, swimming, pulling her canoe up on her beach, then the story moves to a sailboat off Seattle.

ROCKY BLUFF is set on Maui and features another scuba instructor. Beach plays a small role as they hunt for a stalker and killer in the Wailuku area of Maui.

GIRL OF HIS DREAM is all beach as the hero teaches diving and gets involved with her student while teaching him to deep dive.
DREAM COME TRUE has no beach whatsoever seeing it's a Christmas story set in a small town outside Seattle during the holiday season. But, it's a great beach read.
As a person, I'm always longing to get back to the beach, the ocean, scuba. Writing about settings that make me happy, keep my mind in a happy place. See where I'm going with this? Happiness is a mindset and I'm setting my mind to a happy, sandy place!
Hello Readers: This month, a group of us are trying to reach USA Today Bestselling Author
status. A lofty goal, I know, but not unattainable or undeserving, I believe.

I put together a box set of 12 Christmas novellas. Some
sweet romance, some sexy, one a mystery, one has a Marine, one has a coffee
farmer, one involves jurors, one a cowboy, another has hockey players, one a
photographer. All have Christmas and happy endings.

If we sell a ton of these box sets, it might happen that our set reaches the top 150 books sold that week.

It's hard for Indie authors to achieve this because you need money to buy ads to drive sales and the big publishers have the money to buy their authors BIG ADS.

Sad but true that an author can buy their way to the bestseller lists. Money buys ads, ads sell books.

That's our official launch day but you can purchase your copy now and have it automatically delivered to your inbox. That's called a presale and as of today, we have 800 presales reserved by readers. We need at least 4,000 sales to hit the list and just might make it. We have $1,000 worth of ads coming out Nov 14-18 to boost sales for the week that counts our sales to see if we make the top 150 books published that week. This is the closest I've come to this strategy working. My first box set in 2015 got really close but we didn't make it. WE had a ton of fun trying and gave over $1,000 to breast cancer.

Simple Syrup or Agave Syrup
The picture is a bit misleading since I used a blend of Whiskey and Rye, an all Rye version is fantastic as well. Either muddle the Mint at the bottom of the glass or give it a good clap between your hands to release the oils. Fill the glass with ice and fill it 2/3 with Lemon Juice (about 3-4 lemons) and 1/3 Whiskey. It is pretty tart as is so a shot of Simple Syrup helps to balance out the cocktail.

Keep your Fourth festive (and your summer sunny) by implementing these
strategies to keep pets safe and healthy. It is especially important to
consider the welfare of your pets during Fourth of July celebrations
because many are terrified of fireworks and loud noises.

<strike></strike>-Keep pets indoors.
-Use only pet-specific products such as bug repellant and sunscreen.
-Prevent pets from drinking alcohol, which can poison them.
-Outfit pets with ID tags and/or microchip. Keep a clear, current picture of your pet in case they get lost.
-Do not use fireworks around pets.
-Keep harmful chemicals such as lighter fluid and citronella products away from pets.
-Don't give pets table food. Many human foods are hazardous to animals.
-Supervise children around pets who may be agitated or frightened by loud noises. Additionally, make sure children do not inadvertently leave behind toys, such as glow sticks, which dogs may chew and ingest.
-Secure your pet in a safe, quiet, comfortable area at home while you enjoy fireworks and celebrations.
-If traveling with your pet, bring health/vaccination certificates. Check any requirements if you are traveling internationally or flying.
-Plan ahead to find pet-friendly hotels.
-Install pet restraints, pet barriers or use a travel crate in your vehicle to avoid your pet being injured in an accident or distracting the driver.
-Pack pet gear for your road trip: water bowl, toys, dog food, leash, grooming supplies and pet first-aid kit.
-Never leave pets alone in an unattended vehicle, especially in hot weather.
-Learn water safety tips to keep dogs safe around pools and at the beach.
-Know the signs of heat stroke (rapid panting, bright red tongue, thick sticky saliva, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea) and proper treatment.

Welcome summer! The warm weather season is officially underway. For many people, summertime is an opportunity to slow down and enjoy life. If personal obligations like school, family, or work keep you too busy to participate with a book club during the rest of the year, consider setting up a summer book club. Not sure where to start? Here are some tips and suggestions.

Identify potential book club members. This can include friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, etc. Consider the tone and theme of the club to help determine the best fit of members. Do you want a casual girls’ night out or something for a range of ages?

Determine when your book club will meet. This will depend on members’ availability. Are most people available during the day or in the evening? How about weekends? Where will the group meet? Decide on frequency and how long meetings will be. Don’t be intimidated by logistical details. Book clubs don’t have to be hours and hours long. How about an hour meet-up at the local coffee shop? The goal is to merge your love of reading and time with special folks.

Decide what book(s) members will read. Your book club can be any format you choose. Instead of everyone reading the same book, maybe members share recommendations and brief critiques of books they are reading independently. If you prefer a more traditional approach, where everyone reads the same book and shares a discussion, check a best-seller list or accept suggestions from members. Put the list of titles to a vote and go from there. Here is an article with the year’s most anticipated book club reads.

Recruit volunteers. Invite members of the group to help organize the book club:

Someone to send out meeting reminders
Discussion moderators
Refreshments (if appropriate)
Research, such as author bio, book club discussion notes/questions

Decide on ground rules/meeting format. Will the conversation be casual or is each person expected to contribute to the dialogue? How will the moderator/group handle interruptions, keep the conversation on topic and make sure every person has a chance to be heard? Develop a list of questions to facilitate the discussion.

Read, relax and enjoy!

I recently attended a conference called Connecting Writers with Hollywood in Spokane Washington, (a surprisingly ripe bed of film people live or originate there!) and was encouraged that Hollywood wants successful novels for adaptations.
Shawn West, an agent formerly with William Morris, now with the Wayne Agency, represents authors for film deals and spoke eloquently about what the film industry looks for specifically in a novel.
Shawn was talking about a film deal with a large studio out of Hollywood, not a small film company that would make an Indie Film and then sell it to a large studio at an Indie festival.

Here's what they are looking for in a novel or spec script (a tool to sell the premise but not the final script) for a film deal:

1. A Relatable Hero
2. Strong Visual
3. 3 Act Structure
4. 2 Hour Limit
5. Writers that Take Responsibility

He also spoke about franchise appeal. If the book to film is a huge hit, do you have a sequel?
Does it have mass appeal? Young Men, Young Women, Older Men, Older Women
Does it have merchandising potential? Lunchboxes, T-shirts, toys etc.
If it has many hard to reach locations, it will be a large budget film, making it less appealing.

If you get to the point of pitching to a large Hollywood studio, here are some pointers from Shawn:

Don't suggest Tom Cruise play the lead at Sony (he's with Warner Bros)
Pitch to the correct company. Don't pitch a crime drama to Lifetime or a tv drama to Universal
Have a 10 second log line ready.
Know the 3 Acts and where they come in the story. 1 hour dramas have 5 Acts
Be sure to mention if the film is visually appealing. Set the stage.

And a few things I've learned from various people about Pitching:

Sit on the edge of your chair, don't get comfortable.
Imagine telling a campfire story.
Don't pitch only to the men in the room.
Include the conflict. Make it sound life or death.

If you are reading this, I'm hoping you have a pitch coming up or intend to pitch your book. Good luck and remember that what one person doesn't want, another person might see the possibilities.

Last weekend I attended the Readers & Writers Seattle
event. As always, the best part of the event was meeting readers in
person. Okay, I lied. The ripped cover models were the best part of the
event. If you've ever attended a book signing or reader event featuring
cover models, you'll just nod and agree. If you haven't....find one to
attend ASAP!

Of course I was so busy enjoying the eye candy that I
forgot to get photos with them. I did, however, get pictures with some
of my reader and writer friends.
I'm heading to a conference tomorrow and am packing my promo stuff. Sometimes I take 400 DREAM necklaces to put in the registration bags. Sometimes I have book marks. I've used pens, recipe cards, even little chocolates with the book cover on the packaging. Who knows if anyone sees the promo and goes to the site to buy books BUT, if you can spare a hundred here and there, it never hurts to give out free stuff.

Especially if you put your web site link on the material. Or, at least your name.
It's never a good idea to hand out freebies if the recipient can't remember who gave it to them. That makes pens a good idea because they are a useful item with room for lettering. I have a purple sparkly pen from author Sabrina York and that thing travels all over the house, then to my purse, my car and back in to my office. That pen is a great example of money well spent.
My DREAM necklaces weren't a genius idea because they did not have my name of them, BUT, I had fun making them and liked the finished product and got loads of tweets and posts in about them before they went in to the registrant's bags at InD'Scribe Con in California last year. For the posts alone on social media, I'm glad I spent the money, even if no one ever thought afterwards, "This is a nice necklace that Kim Hornsby gave me. I think I'll buy her book about dream jumping."

I like recipe cards, maybe because I love to eat. I like to get recipe cards too. Unfortunately, my favorite recipe cards have what I like to call half-assed promo on the back. On these ones to the left, I did a wacky bad job of lining up my books and left off my web site! (Imagine me hitting my head with a one of my books.)

The conference I'm attending this weekend in Spokane, Washington is for anyone wanting to pitch their book to producers and film makers. I'm teaching a workshop called Channeling Your Inner Rock Star which draws upon the idea that rock stars are the epitome of confidence and branding. I'll be teaching people how to have confidence in public situations. Like pitching, Or just talking to a group. I love this workshop. I love teaching. We talk about digging deep to create that celebrity side of you, then going forth to wow everyone.

Postcards had web address on back!

The swag I bought for this conference is mini guitar key chains. I wish I could tell you that they are inscribed with my web site link but they are not. However, anyone at my class will be offered the handout on tips and tricks for self-confidence by email and I hope to add people to my mailing list. Giving out the key chains is just a gift from me to my "clients" not intended to promote my books but to help the people who attend my workshop to summon bravery when needed.
Hand goes in the pocket, touches the smooth guitar, brain remembers "I'm a Rock Star! I Can Do This!"

Swag, as promo material is called, is something that might not pay off, but then again, it might. Are you willing to take a financial risk and hope to sell some books? Maybe not get a return for your investment? Do you consider getting email addresses a return investment?

If you decide to buy bulk key chains, pens, bookmarks, or make stickers to put on stuff you hand out, just make sure your swag makes the recipient want to know more about you and your books!
Yesterday I turned a big number and spent the day telling myself it's OK to have lived that many years. In fact, it's fantastic! Not only because many people don't get to be this old, but because with that big number comes life experience and yes, wisdom. You don't get to be 60 without learning something!

In celebration of my birthday, I reduced my Indie books on Amazon to rock bottom prices. As low as they can go. My novels are now only 99 cents and the anthology of 5 books in the Dream Jumper Series is only $2.99. This won't last so if you are at all curious about my writing, the idea of entering dreams, Maui lifestyle, scuba diving, mysteries, romance and the possibility of the after life, pick up a book!
The first book in the series is absolutely FREE, so there you go. It's a love story but be forewarned that it leads into the series so many plot points are not tied up.

One of the reasons many readers enjoy historical fiction is that it provides a glimpse into the lives, relationships and traditions of different countries and eras. Weddings and marriage are, by far, one of the most fascinating topics to research.

Here are five interesting facts I discovered about weddings and matrimony during the Regency era while writing my upcoming release, A Wedding Code (The Code Breakers series book 5, releasing April 25, 2017).

For many centuries, marriage was not based on love, but as a strategic alliance between families for social, political or monetary gain. Marriages were often arranged when the bride and groom were still children.

Although the popularity of love matches began gaining popularity in 18th and 19th century England, demonstrating passion for one’s spouse was considered déclassé.

Almack’s, a London social club, became one of the most prominent “marriage marts” of Regency England. Debutantes, who once sought to be presented at the King’s court, vied for vouchers from Almack’s patronesses so they could be presented there instead.

Regency brides did not commission gowns exclusively for their wedding. Most gowns were re-worn. Although any color or pattern was acceptable, blue, white, silver and light-colored hues were most popular. Instead, many brides cherished their wedding shoes as treasured keepsakes.

Brides were given a wedding ring during the wedding ceremony, but men did not wear wedding rings.
Grayce embarks upon a mission to gather proof of the dangerous threat. She enlists the help of her cross-dressing best friend, her street-wise assistant, and Davis’ poodle, to conduct her own investigation. She was grateful when we decided to donate a portion of our proceeds from the box sets to Thymic Cancer Research and touched that her fellow authors would do this.

I didn't know Alexa face to face but always held out hope we'd cross paths at a writers' conference someday. She'd achieved USA Today Bestselling status, writing Romantic Suspense and is still selling well on Amazon. Her permafree lead-in to the Deadly Series is ranked in the top 1500 free on Amazon and has over 3,000 reviews.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Here on the sand we have Award-Winning Author, Jacki Delecki, who's going to tell
us a bit about attending reader/writer events.<span style="font-family: "calibri";">

One of the rising trends in the book community is the proliferation of reader and writer events. Back in the day, authors used book signings as a venue to connect with readers. With the closure of many brick-and-mortar book stores and the evolution of the digital marketplace, traditional book signings are a less popular option, especially when compared to everything a reader/author event (sometimes called a reader appreciation event) offers.

If you haven't attended a reader/writer event, here are three reasons to finish the chapter you're currently reading and find an event to explore today!

SWAG! Event coordinators usually assemble a goody bag for attendees, but authors also have lots (and lots) of goodies. Tip: Bring an extra tote or backpack to carry all the great stuff you collect. You can always tell the hardcore readers who have attended events before because they bring those wheeled-shopper carts!

Make new book friends. Everyone at a reader/writer event is there because they love books - reading them or writing them. This fun and friendly environment makes it easy to chat with strangers. You might even make a new BBF (book best friend)!

Meet the real person behind the book cover. Have you ever wondered what your favorite author is like in real life? Connecting in person gives you chance to bond over shared interests, laugh over an inside joke or just express how much you enjoy their work.

Each reader/writer event is different. Some last a few hours; some a few days. Some are free; some require paid admission. Some include a variety of genres; some are genre specific. Most include a book signing and opportunity to mix and mingle with authors.

I'm participating in the Reader & Writer Event in Seattle, June 3, 2017. This event includes more than 50 authors, hot cover models and other "bookish" fun. If you're in the area, get a ticket before the event is sold out. If not, look online for other reader/writer events and have a great time!
Ok, just a little somethin' somethin about the WOMEN of the Scorch Series.Who could we dream up to match the awesome Luciano brothers? Each brother finds just the right woman in our stories...and some of the pairings surprise!

1) These women are all amazing. (like you and me and US!)
2) they all have flaws and challenges that get worked on during the journey and in the relationship (like us!)
3) Variety of careers: biologist, schoolteacher, virology expert, ER doctor, law student, actress (like us!)
4) All kinds of bodies! Waify and wiry, chubby and fulsome, muscular with big booty, slim with large boobs, Hollywood yoga, short and curvy (like us!)
5) Able to take a lickin' and keep on tickin (you can interpret that a number of ways!) but love their men enough to follow them through hell and lead the way, and enjoy being carried when the situation calls for it (like us!)
6) Variety of intelligences: supersmart to average.(like us!)
7) Variety of backgrounds and issues, minorities and economic classes from American aristocracy to trailer trash (like us!)

Read on...

This week I'm packing my sunscreen and string bikini (not!) and am heading to Maui. I 'm so excited I could spit.
I'll be flying Thursday at dawn, arriving shortly after (time difference) and heading to this beach below to run in the water with happy tears streaming down my face.

My girlfriend Eliza is coming with me and we are staying at Lynn's house where I wrote and staged THE DREAM JUMPER'S PROMISE.
Lynn has a big hammock on her porch overlooking Molokai, tea lights everywhere, a cute little dog, an open concept house filled with Hawaiian artifacts and my dive gear in her attic. Eliza, Lynn and I will talk about how growing older sucks and doesn't and will make breakfasts with home-grown papayas and bananas, will laugh about funny cat YouTube videos, will wear cotton sundresses over bathing suits, listen to the cockatiel next door squawk constantly, and will head off to Barnes & Noble on Saturday for my talk at 2 pm on writing a mystery novel that was set on Maui.
Yes, my friends, I am speaking at Maui's only bookstore on the Saturday and hoping against hope that someone besides Lynn and Eliza attend. Actually, I've heard from six other friends that they will come so I won't be standing at a table talking to the same two friends I've been talking to for days.

If you are on Maui on Saturday January 14th at 2 pm, I beg you to stop in and prove to Barnes & Noble that taking a chance on an Indie Author was a good thing. I'll even give you the cash to buy my book from them. Use the code words "Slip me cash, please." No questions.

See you there and if the talk goes long, let's head on over to Aloha Mixed Plate to drink Kona ale and eat traditional Hawaiian macaroni salad and grilled humuhumunukunukuapuaa. (kidding--it's the state fish!)
TODAY on the BEACH, we have Suspense author Kim Hornsby who's been known to enjoy the sand between her toes on occasion. Take it away, Kim...

Amazon has a lot going on for authors. Their building must be bursting at the seams with all the programs they offer. Amazon Encore, Kindle Direct Publishing, Kindle Countdown, Select, Amazon Scout, Kindle Unlimited...

Kindle Worlds is one of their relatively new programs that allows pretty much anyone to write a Fan Fiction novella or novel from their list of Bestsellers and if it passes Amazon's content scrutiny, they'll publish your book, plunk their Kindle Worlds badge in the corner of your cover and take some royalties when you sell.

When this program began 5 years ago, any character you developed belonged to Kindle Worlds and you could not tie in your own previously written works or characters in the KW book.

Kindle Worlds Available - The List

I recently attended a panel on KW at a Writing Conference and the authors on that panel are allowed to tie in their own novels with their KW books. The K World they all write for is a medieval romance series and their World Owner negotiated a contract to include this. The contemporary romance writers on the panel said they made their KW characters descendants of the well-known Kings and Queens in the World. I'm not sure if this is beneficial or not.

The one I write for doesn't allow tie ins to your previously written works but I have loads of crossover traffic to my series that's set in the Hawaiian islands and is also Suspense/Crime. I've gained many readers, including beta readers and our world has formed a group that supports each other on social media, in and out of the World.
Thanks to our World Owner, Toby Neal, who is involved in our efforts in a very big way, we even have our own closed Facebook Group where we confer on loads of stuff, KW-related.
World owners, NY Times Bestselling Authors, and very successful novelists in their own right are now crossing into other Worlds and writing spin offs to either support their friend's World or to gain readers! Toby Neal writes for Sydney Rye, Bella Andre writes for one...

If you're interested in broadening your readership, consider this:

Go to the Kindle Worlds site, chose a book with a huge following that you feel you can do a good job with, research the World to make sure this is a good fit, and then write your book. The guidelines are listed on the site to tell you which characters you can use, book length, and royalty information. Different World owners have different sets of criteria.
HAWAII! and I love the series, Toby Neal's writing style, and the characters.
Initially I was lured in by her gorgeous covers when I saw our books side by side on a book shelf in Kihei, Maui. I read two books, loved them and contacted her to say so. She asked me to join her World and I put one of her novellas in my Suspense Box Set.
I later found out her husband is a photographer and is responsible for these amazing cover photos.
I was excited to sharpen my writing skills by trying my hand at a Toby book. It was easier than writing one of my own books because I used her characters and locations. Riding Toby Neal's coattails proved to be a good business move for me.
My novella, Rocky Bluff, at 40,000 words, basically wrote itself in 2 months, and has done well. I made some money, made friends as well as business contacts and beta readers (Toby shared her list with us!!!) and cast my net wider as an author.
I'm proud of the Murder Mystery that I crafted and look forward to writing another in a series of Bluff books. I left the plot open in Rocky Bluff for the next book. I'm off to Maui January 2017 to meet with Toby and to plot out my next KW book!
I asked several Lei Crime World Authors to answer questions on their experience. All were previously published authors when they took on Lei Crime World.
Here's what Amy Shojai, Julie Gilbert and Scott Bury had to say:

2. How many books had you published when you

3. What was your reason for writing for this
KW Series?<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">

(novella) and reach additional readers<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 9.0pt;">

4. Did you contact the author or just start
writing your book?<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">

me! <span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 9.0pt;">

5. Did the author support your book and your
writing?<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Absolutely. Toby Neal
was incredibly supportive, organized launch parties/promotions and helped with
resources regarding her "world."<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 9.0pt;">

6. Did he/she give any guidelines as to which
characters were available and which were off limits?<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Yes.<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 9.0pt;">

7. Did you write a novel or novella and how
long did it take you?<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">I wrote a novella, just
under 25,000 words. I tend to write slowly, and had the concept early but was
working on other projects at the same time. It took me about four months to
write.<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 9.0pt;">

8. Did you write in the author’s style, your
own, or a mix of both?<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">I write in my own style.<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 9.0pt;">

9. Did you have your work professionally
edited?<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Yes, I had the work both
edited and copy-edited.<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 9.0pt;">

10. Did you have a cover made by a
professional?<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">I designed my own cover.<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 9.0pt;">

11. How easy was Kindle Worlds to work with?
Upload? Guidelines? Help with Cover?<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The KW platform is a bit
clunky and at times buggy. Uploading the text itself worked fine but I had a
lot of trouble with the cover. Eventually, I had to delete the whole thing and
start over--and it finally worked. <span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 9.0pt;">

12. What were the benefits of you writing for
this particular world?<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">

<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 9.0pt;">Probably the top benefit was meeting and working with Toby Neal
and her AWESOME group of KW contributors! I have plans to write at least 2 more
in this KW as sequels to my first novella. Secondly, I've reached new readers
who already love Toby's "world" and her characters. They're already
eager to find out more about the backstory of Keiki, the police dog, as she
grows from clueless puppy into the wonderful Rottweiler protector of Lei in
Toby's series.<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

And here's what Julie Gilbert said:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">1. How many books in the series did you read of the World Author?
1-3
3-5 <span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">I think I’m in this range. I heard the audiobooks up through
Twisted Vine for Toby Neal’s Lei Crime Series.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">
More

2. How many books had you published when you decided to write for KW?

<span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">8 ish.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

3. What was your reason for writing for this KW Series?

<span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">I found the idea of KW intriguing. It’s a chance to see what you
can do with established characters. In some ways, it’s a different kind of
writing than one does with their own works. I’d done mystery before but not
ones that fit in more mainstream and thriller categories. It was a cool
challenge for me.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

4. Did you contact the author or just start writing your book?

<span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">I sort of attached myself to the coat-tails of Toby Neal’s
launching Lei Crime KW. We’d talked a bit on Facebook, and I heard about KW
through her blog announcement. I knew I had a few weeks to make the deadline,
so I hopped on board.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

5. Did the author support your book and your writing?

<span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">I’ve worked for and with a grand total of two authors in launching
their Kindle Worlds, so I can’t speak for everybody. But, yes, I’ve found them
both very supportive.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

6. Did he/she give any guidelines as to which characters were available and
which were off limits?

<span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">I think Toby only had two that were off-limits. I’m not sure
Emily Kimmelman had any. I knew I was just going with Sydney Rye anyway with
that series, so it didn’t matter as much to me who couldn’t be named.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

7. Did you write a novel or novella and how long did it take you?

<span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">All my KW stories are novellas. Back in the day, we were advised
that the sweet spot of sorts with KW is about 25-30 thousand words. I just
stuck with that. I think that advice was given to launch people just to give us
a starting point that wouldn’t scare people off.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">The rough drafts for my KW stories take about 2 weeks to put
together. Then, I do about a ½ week of edits, give to some beta readers, and
make corrections. Total time is about 3 weeks if I’m working my day job at the
same time. About 2 weeks if I can concentrate on that in the summer.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

8. Did you write in the author’s style, your own, or a mix of both?

<span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">My style.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

9. Did you have your work professionally edited?

<span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Not the KW story. I just read it 3-4 times myself and asked
about 12 people to look at it. Then read it again.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

10. Did you have a cover made by a professional?

<span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Define professional? All my covers are made by other people. I
don’t know if my cover art lady solely makes a living off of her work or just
does it as a hobby, but if you define professional as makes money doing it,
then yes.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">On an amazon rating scale they get a 4/5 stars from me. The
process has mostly been easy, but their cover creator thing is about the
clunkiest program out there. They do NOT make it easy to upload your own cover
or change your uploaded file. You have to practically right click in a certain,
magical spot and hope you get the option to upload a new option. Other than
that, it’s been decent to me.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">
<span style="color: #3333cc; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">There are modest financial benefits to writing for KWs. There’s
also the chance to meet other writers and new readers through those other
writers. I don’t think it’s a get-rich-quick scheme, but it’s steady enough to
pay for itself, meaning I can make enough to pay off the cover in a month or
so. It’s also great to keep exploring new worlds. It stretches the writing
muscles. Writing shorter stories (novellas) is a different sort of beast than a
novel. They’re a lot of fun to put together. You get to let the imagination run
wild for a bit, but you also have to make sense.<span style="font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">

And here's what Scott Bury said:

<span style="background: #f1f0f0; color: #4b4f56; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">1. How many
books in the series did you read of the Lei Crime Series by Toby Neal?

<span style="color: #4b4f56; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">
3-5
I had read three books in the Lei Crime series
before Toby Neal invited me to join the new Lei Crime Kindle World back in late
2014. I realized that I could not complete a novella in time for the first
publishing date of April 1, 2015, but I did manage for the second “flight” in
July 2015.

2. How many books had you published when you
decided to write for KW?

<span style="color: #4b4f56; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">
I had published three full length novels by
then: The Bones of the Earth, a historical fantasy; One Shade of Red, a spoof
of the biggest seller of the time; and Army of Worn Soles, the first part of
the memoir of my father-in-law, a Red Army soldier during World War II.

3. What was your reason for writing for this
KW Series?

<span style="color: #4b4f56; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">
I liked Toby Neal’s work, and she invited me.
4. Did you contact the author or just start
writing your book?

advice. I sent her the outline of my first Lei Crime book, Torn Roots, and she
gave me excellent feedback. Later, I sent her a draft, and again, she provided
invaluable insight. I even took the opportunity to take my vacation in Maui,
the setting for the book and Toby’s home, and she graciously agreed to meet
with me. It all helped a lot. Toby even read the first draft of my second Lei
Crime mystery, Palm Trees & Snowflakes.

write Torn Roots. Palm Trees & Snowflakes took a matter of weeks, but it’s
half the length. My third Lei Crime book, Dead Man Lying, took a little over a
month to write, plus time for editing and rewriting.

comes through a little in the personalities of the characters she created,
because he style is so vivid.
Are you a Black Friday shopper, battling the masses to get in on super deals, or do you prefer to purchase holiday gifts from the comfort of home on Cyber Monday? Whatever your preference, this upcoming weekend is one of the busiest times of the year for shoppers.

Did you know this weekend includes Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday? Retailers and merchants focus an enormous amount of time and research to cater to shoppers’ preferences and patterns. According to Fact Retriever, retailers use satellite images of retail parking lots to predict earnings and rely on psychological triggers such as music, visuals and key words to entice shoppers. Read 38 Fascinating Facts about Holiday Shopping for more details.
Holiday shopping can be stressful. It is time consuming and prompts financial anxiety. There may also be concerns about finding the “perfect” gift, obligatory gift giving and trying not to lose sight of the real meaning of the season. Here are nine tips to help you survive–and maybe even enjoy–holiday shopping.

Make a list and check it twice. Jot ideas for gifts so you don’t wander aimlessly. Having a list can also help you determine your budget.

Decide on a gift-giving theme. Have fun by deciding to purchase gifts according to a theme – books, crazy socks, food & cooking, gardening, music.

Buy in bulk. No need to stress about giving each person an individualized gift. If you find an object you think people would enjoy, buy one for everyone on your list.

Be realistic about your budget. Know what you can afford to spend and plan accordingly. If finances are tight, get creative and give handmade or homemade gifts such as jams/jellies, baked goods or coupons for services such as babysitting, yard work, etc.

Give an “experiential” gift. Give a gift that allows people to enjoy a special experience – cooking classes, travel, skydiving. Even dinner or movie certificates are great!

Give of your time, talent or treasures. You don’t have to buy something to give a meaningful gift. People may be even more appreciative of gifts such as preparing a special meal or recipe, piano lessons, creating a painting or handing down a beloved family heirloom.

Don’t shop when you are tired, hungry or pressed for time. Dealing with long lines, crowds and no parking spots is bad enough, but the experience is even more unpleasant when you’re not at your best. Avoid peak shopping times (such as weekends), fuel up before you go, take your e-reader for long waits in line, leave the kids at home and focus on the spirit behind your gift.

Shop online. Save time and money by shopping online. Be sure to allow sufficient delivery time, especially if you are ordering gifts that need to be shipped.

Have fun! Hand out mini candy canes to children (ask parents first!) and store clerks. Wear colorful holiday clothing. Admire the decorations. Indulge in a cup of hot chocolate and cookies. Get your photo taken with Santa.

This national holiday is dedicated to honoring veterans of the armed services (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, National Guard, and Coast Guard) who served to protect our country.

Did you know Veterans Day originated from Armistice Day, a holiday enacted in recognition of WW I soldiers? Click HERE to read more about the history of Veterans Day.

In addition to honoring the men and women who have served, I like to acknowledge the contributions of canine service members. I’m not the only American in awe of “war dogs.” There are several organizations dedicated to honoring and assisting active and retired military dogs.
These two people have big secrets and they guard them well. Both masters of playing their cards close to their chests, the thirty-two-year old James and the twenty-five-year old Kristina approach each other cautiously when they meet for the first time in Lahaina, Maui, the charming historic town on West Maui where anything can happen and does.
Having lived in Lahaina for 11 years, I wrote this story from the background of a scuba instructor and someone who enjoyed her single girl days on this amazing island. It's a struggle to write about Maui and I even have to visit the island regularly to do research, like below, where I dove Kapalua Bay in 2015.

James Dunn is a loner, always has been, ever since he discovered at age 8 that he has the gift of hyper-intuition and can slip into other people's dreams. Finding himself on Maui between jobs with the Seattle Police Department, James hires Kristina Greene, a scuba instructor, to certify him as a Deep Diver. Over the 5 day course, things heat up and James breaks down Kristina's hard and fast rule about not dating students. It doesn't take long before the charmingly sexy James and the feisty and resistant Kristina fall into bed together. Driven by her anger towards her parents and the tension of keeping a dark secret, Kristina lets wild abandon take over. More than once James calls Kristina a "tiger" in bed and is happy to match her enthusiasm. (Reader, be warned that they are like any couple at the beginning of a love affair when they can't get enough of each other.) They each have a secret that must be guarded and kept, especially from each other. As they get closer, emotionally, keeping these secrets becomes almost impossible and both are put to the ultimate test until James enters a dream of Kristina's that changes everything.

If you have read the DREAM JUMPER series, you know that this story does not end well for James and Kristina and that is the premise for the next book. Second Warning.

I invite you to pick up a copy of Girl of his Dream, drink a Corona with James, feel the ocean breeze, smell the plumeria flowers and experience the magic of Maui.
