We've been busy on the BEACH lately and haven't posted for a week or two but here's Diana Layne now to talk about a fun subject. Take it away, Diana...

What TV Shows Are Your Favorite?

Recently on Facebook there’s been this post going around:

I’m thinking you’re going to choose one of your favorite TV Shows to be in, right? I did, I chose Bewitched, one of a short list of my all-time favorite TV shows. My thought was if I were a witch that I could twitch my nose and the housecleaning, laundry and cooking would all get done, and I’d have more time to write. Then Alicia Dean informed me that just because I chose Bewitched doesn’t mean that I’d get to be a witch. I cry foul!

So if I couldn’t be a witch, my next show would be Gilligan’s Island, followed by I Love Lucy. You might see a pattern here that these are old shows. Yes, I seem to have turned into my grandmother. She never had cable and once she learned to use a VCR, she’d set it up to record old movies that came on late at night on network TV. That was what she watched.

I gave up cable a few years ago, mainly for financial reasons. This was done knowing full well that I can only get two network channels (CBS, PBS) through an antenna on good days. I went through a period of withdrawal, but I had DVD’s and I bought a Roku and subscribed to Netflix and Amazon Prime (which is still much cheaper than that cable bill). I don’t miss cable at all!

And I tend to like the old shows I grew up on. Why? I’m not sure. Maybe trying to recapture my youth? Enjoying them from an adult perspective this time? I’m not sure, but my grandmother was on to something, because I’ve also started watching those old movies, the ones made in the 50s and 60s, and you know, some of those old movies are pretty darned good. And the old series…excellent!

So how about you? What sort of shows do you like? Are there current TV series you follow? Old series you like to watch over and over again?

  1. Ha! Love this post. Right up my alley. I'm a bit of a tv-holic, though. Sorry to burst your bewitched bubble, but it did say you were trapped in the show, it didn't say you could choose your character. ;) I chose Dexter, because I would be satisfied with being his girlfriend or his victim. (Yes, I know, twisted, but I find it exciting the way he dispatched his victims). Anyway, I LOVE those old shows and movies too. Leave it to Beaver and I Love Lucy are two of my faves. I love Gilligan's Island and Bewitched and both Bob Newhart shows. My current faves are Vampire Diaries, Justified, The Mindy Project, etc, etc

    1. :) I was a TV-holic growing up, only child and all that. I'd plan practicing piano and homework around what was on TV...and afternoon TV always entailed of Lucy, Bewitched, Gilligan, Leave it to Beaver, and Dick Van Dyke. I've never seen your favorites, I've been without cable now for several years. But that show Justified does look interesting. Wonder if it's on Netflix?

  2. I was a Buffy nut. I moved to The Closer and Law and Order. Now, it's more Castle and Supernatural. There is so much to choose from! Thank you for the post and bringing me a blast from the past. It was fun. :)

    1. My oldest daughter loved Buffy, but I was commuting 130 miles a day at that time so even if I managed to sit down to watch it, I'd zone out. Seems like something bad happened to Angel???

  3. I'd love to be trapped in Castle (sorry, Beckett) or Firefly. I know the latter only lasted 14 episodes, but I love them. (Seriously crushing on Nathan Fillion. LOL) I wouldn't have thought about old shows but I wouldn't mind being Ethel in I Love Lucy. I'm more the faithful sidekick type. I love tv shows--always watch NCIS, Warehouse 13 (wouldn't want to be trapped in that one--a little freaky), Rissoli & Isles.

    1. I bought the Firefly series in some Amazon sale but I've not had time to watch them yet. I think maybe my older son told me they weren't appropriate for my younger kids and I don't have too much of a chance of watching TV without them. I've heard all sorts of good things about it, though, just might have to wait til the kids are older. That's another reason I've gone with the older TV shows, I don't have to worry about bad language or inappropriate stuff...and for some reason, now that I'm an older mom on my second family, I'm more picky about that than when I was younger. Although...a few years ago we couldn't even watch I Love Lucy because Lucy lying really bothered my younger son. I never even noticed until he did. Ha.

  4. I'm a huge fan of Timothy Olyphant and Mark Harmon. So it'd be Justified so I could get my fill of Raylan Givens, OR Navy: NCIS so I can get my silver-haired, blued eyed fix from Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Besides, somebody has to tell them how ridiculous it is for Abby's character to contaminate her space with pets and big gulps. And what the heck is with the windows at sidewalk level? Sheesh! But yeah, since Raylan's a little young for me, Gibbs seems like he needs a good woman in his life...I'll volunteer for that part. :)
    Great post, Diana...sorry I'm late!
